Well, we rolled into town just in time for dinner. Fairmont
is a resort town that has a winter population of around 30 people
. In the summer, the staff at the resort alone outnumbers the
locals. After checking out the pub, we went to check into our
room at the bungalos. We were met at the
counter by a young guy with a filthy
t-shirt, a runny nose, and red watery eyes. He has no idea what
is going on and while he's trying to figure it out, Michael points
out that he is bleeding... It isn't a promising introduction to
what will be our headquarters for the next couple of days. I'm
sure we've seen worse, though (eg. Winnipeg last year). Th rooms
turn out to be fine. It turns out the the guy at the counter is
the nephew of the owner. He has nasty alergies and is commonly
declaring "Gramma, I'm bleeding again!" Fun times...
Anyway, load in and soundcheck went smoothly. There were a few tables of people finishing their dinners. It seemed that they all stuck arond for the show too. Keep in mind, tho, that a few hours had passed between soundcheck and our first set. So at least one of the tables was out-of-hand liquored.
Russ, the bar manager told us that Fri. would be dead and Sat. packed. It kind of turned out to be the other way around. By second set Fri. night, the place was pretty damn busy. Second night turned out to be a bit more "intimate". That's cool, tho, 'cause we were celebrating the end of a stretch of 5 shows in a row. It was our Friday. Time to blow off some steam... After the show, we caught the tail end of a bush party at Pascal's place. Hung around with Cory, Ian and the boys 'till way past everyone's bedtime.
-Meeting Heather, Joe and Iza (short for Isabella), staff from the bungalow who became our cheering section for both nights. Heather even changed her plans to make it to our second night. Thanks, guys! See ya in Invermere!
-During the "Bag Of Death", (if you don't know what this is, you've never seen us live..) a girl pulled up her top to get our attention. We feel that this is a Rock N' Roll landmark! I mean, we're not KISS or anything, but at least we know that someone is paying attention. Pure enthusiasm!!
-One of the tables that were there for our soundcheck and pissed for our set were the source of much amusement. Let's tick off a few of their magical moments.
1. The woman sitting in front of us while we're playing, does this creepy flip of her shirt and luckily we avert our eyes before any psychological damage was caused. Michael's response was "What the hell was that?"
2. A large, late 40s fellow with a Grizzly Adams beard takes centre of the dance floor and dramatically kicks off his sandals as if a Saturday Night Fever re-enactment is about to take place. Instead, he does this strange stationary boogie that definitely needed no loss of footwear. This same guy later had a complete conversation with (us?). Since we were in mid song though, and could only see his mouth moving, it was a pretty one-sided conversation. He seemed to be answering his own questions anyway, so it worked out fine.
3. Our set concluded and this woman (SkirtFlasher), had sent her boyfriend to get us to announce last song so they could dance to it. two announcements were made and then we played 3 encores. Only after we put down our guitars, does this woman show up to announce that "WE SUCK" for not playing one more song. After a few apologies from her table, Michael does an acoustic version of "Brown Eyed Girl". Now she's all happy with us again. So happy, in fact that she starts looming over Michael, arms groping the air as if she is trying to find the best angle to grope him from. This is our que to get outta there! Her boyfriend comes out to the van and buys a cd. Thanks guy.
The next day, Russ the bar manager took us out on his jet boat to give us a tour of the million dollar houses and drag Chris around on a tube. Chris has been jonesing for a boat ride since we left, so he's happy (and sore) by the time we hit shore. We brought Heather with us and left Joe working at the Bungalow (poor , tired Joe!). Oh, yeah, we got to meet Mike Vernon too! Goalie for the Flames. Nice house, Mike! Thanks to Russ for a great afternoon. Hope to see you all on the 27th! -
