Calgary Alberta

July 2nd-5th

What is up with this band and not getting a real paying gig in Calgary? We arrived here on Sun. the 2nd under the stress of a "Hurry the hell up or I'll kill you dead-type vibe from the guy hosting the radio show that we are late for. It ended up that we were half an hour late for The Stepping Stone- an internet radio show that broadcasts once a week under the direction of Rich "The Messenger" Maidment. After much apologizing, he forgives us... I think. We cram inside the closet sized studio and talk about the band, the tour and our missing guitarist. After a couple minutes of Rich trying to drag nasty road stories out of us, (we had none, of course!) this guy called Crazy Drunken Al phones in to tell us that he has Christian at his place and will send him to us when he sobers up enough to get off the floor. Michael tried to play a song but his throat was so trashed that he sounded like a yowling rummy. luckily, two strings break at the same time ending the horrible performance. The Drunk Al guy phones in about 20 more times. About mid-way through his phoning barrage, he invites us over to have ham for dinner. The rest of his calls were updates on the status of the ham.

Ring.

"Hello, The Stepping Stone"

".....the ham's ready..."

Of course, as generous as the offer was, we opted for beer and home-made burgers with Rich and Tanya. Rich must have every local band's cd from all of Alberta. It was lots of fun going through his stuff and checking it out.

After (much needed) showers, Chris calls his buddy Jimmy and we hook up with him and his brother Sean (from Vic.). Off we go to Hooters for a couple of beers. (Jimmy cooks there on weekends.)Check yhis out. Michael and Chris stormed CJ92 FM. Ran past the security guy and into the control room! They take no prisoners, And pump our show at Meegatunes. Let's skip ahead to Tuesday, the day of our show at Megatunes, an independent record store with a stage for bands to play on. Tons of cool Canadian bands have played there (Gob, Huevos Rancheros). After a big mess of miscommunication, we all hook up and head downtown to check out the record store and mess around downtown. We meet Rob, who, as well as working at Megatunes, is in a hardcore band as well. Chris and Michael go down to see their practice . They haven't played together in 7 years and had flown in their bass player from Victoria for their upcoming show... Anyway, back to our show... It went down like this. The store was empty while we set up, mostly empty while we played and empty while we loaded out. we sold one t-shirt to our friend Jakki and Michael's aunt and cousins showed up but escaped before we could dig up any dirt on for Michael S. Montgomery: The Early Years", a book that Chris has been working on. Oh well, another missing chapter.

This turned out to be a long and draining week for all of us. If you've ever been alone and lost in a big city at 2am with barely anything but a backpack and coffee money, you can relate. but that's another story....
